Have a question about the Civil Penalty Waiver Grace Period? Check out this FAQ.

Effective February 24, 2022, the MDTA has begun a civil penalty waiver grace period for tolls paid in full and has ceased referring toll bills to the Central Collection Unit (CCU) and MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) temporarily. The grace period will end at 11:59 p.m. on November 30, 2022, and the MDTA will resume referrals of unpaid toll bills and civil penalties to CCU and MDOT MVA on December 1.

The MDTA has ceased escalating toll bills to the Central Collection Unit (CCU) and MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) over the waiver grace period. This acts as a temporary payment plan by allowing you to stretch out toll payments without the worry of further consequences, until the waiver grace period ends at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2022.

If you have unpaid Video Tolls and/or Civil Penalties, the MDTA will waive the Civil Penalties if your toll balance is paid in full between Feb. 24 and 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2022. After the grace period ends, customers will remain responsible for all unpaid tolls and civil penalties and referrals will resume.

This plan does not impact the posting of backlogged and current tolls.

The MDTA has completed posting online at DriveEzMD.com all Maryland customer tolls that were deferred during the COVID-19 pandemic. The MDTA encourages customers to check their account at DriveEzMD.com and pay their tolls now before civil penalties are assessed on December 1.

For customers who choose not to pay their Video Tolls before the due date on the notice, mailings of citations/civil penalties will continue during the grace period and will remain in effect if unpaid tolls are not paid by 11:59 p.m. Nov. 30, 2022 (within the grace period).

Yes, you can spread out your toll payments at your convenience during the nine months of the waiver grace period. Each time you pay a specific Video Toll transaction in full, the associated Civil Penalty is waived. In order for all your Civil Penalties to be waived, you must pay all your unpaid Video Tolls (your full toll balance) by the end of the waiver grace period at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2022

If you already contested to court, but have not been scheduled or have not yet appeared in court, your Civil Penalties will be waived and your court date cancelled if you pay your toll balance during the waiver grace period and before your court date (if scheduled).

No action is required by you, as your Civil Penalties will be waived automatically during the grace period.

Anyone with outstanding Civil Penalties associated with unpaid Maryland Video Toll transactions is eligible for the waiver grace period, if the toll transaction is paid in full by 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2022. Toll debt that had already been referred to MDOT MVA or CCU prior to Feb. 24, 2022, is NOT eligible for the waiver grace period.

After the Civil Penalty Waiver Grace Period ends at 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30, 2022, all unpaid tolls AND civil penalties are due based on the printed due dates, and toll debt referrals to MDOT MVA and CCU resume.

Customers remain responsible for their tolls for travels on Maryland toll facilities.

You must pay your Video Toll/Notice of Toll Due by the payment due date.

If you traveled a toll facility without an E-ZPass or Pay-By-Plate, be sure to take advantage of the opportunity to save 15% (up to $5 per transaction) by paying your Video Tolls online before the Notice of Toll Due (NOTD) is mailed. To take advantage of the early payment discount, we encourage you to monitor any Video Tolls as they post online at https://csc.DriveEzMD.com/pay-tolls-now. If tolls associated with your vehicle are not in the system, stay tuned as we will continue to post additional Video Toll transactions.

E-ZPass remains the most cost-effective way to travel toll roads in Maryland, saving drivers up to 77% versus the higher rates and additional paperwork that come with Video Tolls. Enroll in E-ZPass or sign up for Pay-By-Plate today at DriveEzMD.com/acct-types/.

Already an E-ZPass customer? Make sure your E-ZPass is properly mounted, sign up for automatic replenishment, and keep your address, vehicle and payment information up to date.

No, as the Civil Penalty Waiver Grace Period is NOT retroactive.
